HUNTSVILLE – Ashley Ellis fought off several match points to win the decisive victory at number-two singles to give Texas State a 4-3 victory at Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference dual match Sunday afternoon at the McAdams Courts.
Ellis lost the first set 4-6 against Giorgia Pozzan before she rallied to win the final two sets 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the victory for the Bobcats.
In addition to her win in singles play, Ellis teamed with Nyssa Peele to win the number-two doubles match over Pozzan and Paty Manzur by a score of 9-7.
Texas State won the doubles point in the dual match after winning two of the three doubles matches against the Bearkats. Mackenzie Farmer and Kiki Kruse also defeated Eleonora Kuruc and Stasa Vujosevic 9-7 in the number-three doubles match.
Sam Houston State’s Irina Sotnikova and Peta Taylor beat Andrea Giraldo and Lainy Chafitz 8-3 in the number-one double match.
In addition to Ellis winning the number-two singles match, Kruse and Farmer won the number-five and number-six singles matches, respectively, for Texas State.
Kruse won her number-five match over Kuruc 6-2, 6-2, while Farmer defeated Lilit Martirosyan 6-3, 6-4 in the number-six match.
Sam Houston also won three singles matches. Sotnikova raised her singles record to 21-1 this season with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Giraldo in the number one singles.
Taylor won 6-1 6-3 over Peele at number three singles and Paty Manzur won at number four over Chafitz 6-2 6-3.
The win was Texas State’s second straight win after returning from a 14-day break. The win also gives the Bobcats an 8-4 overall record and a 5-3 mark in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston dropped to 7-6 overall and has a 2-3 SLC mark.
The Bobcats travel to Nicholls on April 4 and Southeastern Louisiana on April 5 before returning home to play UTSA on April 10 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on April 11 to closes out the regular season.
