Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) has started its own herb garden, which now supplies the hospital’s kitchen.
“Unfortunately, the convenience of fast food has caused some folks to forget the value of these tiny, green plants in their everyday lives,” said Alcia Westfall, CTMC Food and Nutrition Services Manager. “Herbs can provide you with great flavor and little to no calories.”
Under Westfall’s direction, CTMC began partnering with the Texas Hill Country School (THCS) earlier this spring to provide the herb garden. It is located in CTMC’s courtyard, just outside the cafeteria, and visitors are welcome.
THCS students helped plant the garden, and they tend it as needed. CTMC chefs now use the organically grown herbs for patient and visitor meals. For more information, or for herb gardening tips, call (512) 753-3758, or email Westfall.Email | Print
