Hays CISD schools keep graduation schedule

STAFF REPORT

Lehman and Hays High Schools in Hays CISD will still hold their graduation ceremonies on May 29-30, at 8 p.m, as previously scheduled.

A quorum of Hays CISD trustees voted unanimously to purchase and install new light poles at Bob Shelton Stadium for $308,384, which will enable the ceremonies to take place. On March 6, a light pole at the stadium snapped in high winds and landed on the roof of Bales Gym. The remaining light poles were removed as a safety precaution that same night.

Said Hays CISD Interim Superintendent Carter Scherff, “If, for some reason, they do not get installed on time, Musco (the manufacturer) will provide mobile lighting trucks at no additional cost.”

Hays CISD trustees called a meeting because the lights counted as an emergency purchase. Had trustees not approved the new poles, the standard purchasing process could have taken a month. According to Scherff, the lights would not have been installed by graduation, and invitations and announcements had already been printed.
