STAFF REPORT

Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) celebrated its topping out ceremony on March 12 at the construction site of its $35 million expansion.

Hospital and community leaders signed the last beam to be placed before enjoying a lunch provided by the BE&K Engineering Company.

Work still remains on the expansion project, which will include a new Childbirth Center, a Level II Neonatal Critical Care Unit, a new cardiac telemetry inpatient nursing unit and expansion and renovation of CTMC’s existing surgical suites. When finished, CTMC will enlarge to a 139-bed facility with all private rooms.

“When we took a look at the needs of our community, and the expanded services our new facility will be providing, we knew we had to give birth to a broader range of programming,” said CTMC Women’s Center Director Ria Grobler, RN. “In fact, we’re not done yet.”

In addition to the physical improvements to CTMC, a specialized Childbirth Educator/Lactation Consultant, who was hired last fall, has helped to create a completely new set of childbirth education offerings.

The new slate of programming includes enhancements to childbirth preparation for first-time mothers, as well as expanding the Cradle of Care program to include lactation services for all mothers in Hays County, Daddy Boot Camp, car seat safety clinics, exercise programs for expectant mothers and a program with San Marcos CISD for pregnant teens.

Other new offerings are a childbirth refresher class for returning parents, a class on Cesarean Sections, breastfeeding and scheduled tours of the facility for expectant families. All of the programs will be offered in English and Spanish.

For more information on CTMC childbirth offerings, or to schedule a tour of the facility, contact CTMC at (512) 753-3583, or visit its website and click on classes and events.
