The Latino Student Association (LSA) at Texas State will hold a dinner honoring civil rights leader Cesar E. Chavez on March 31, at 6 p.m. in the LBJ Student Center ballroom.
The event will highlight Chavez’s work with the United Farm Workers (UFW), and his advocacy for the civil liberties of farm workers.
“It’s a great way to acknowledge the potential one person can have when it comes to fighting for what you believe in,” LSA member and event organizer Abigail Moreno said. “Cesar Chavez is a great example.”
After the dinner, Jamie P. Martinez will deliver the keynote address. Martinez marched with Chavez, and is currently the national treasurer for the League of United Latin-American Citizens (LULAC). Martinez founded the Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice. Martinez also has worked with other civil rights luminaries, such as Rosa Parks and the Reverend Ralph Abernathy.
Martinez will draw on his experiences working as an activist and organizer to tell the story of Chavez’s life, explaining why many consider him to be one of the greatest Latino leaders of the 20th century.
The event is free and open to the public. However, reservations are encouraged and can be obtained through this email address. For additional information, contact LSA President Christina Zambrano at (210) 455-1403, or Paul Vega at (210) 455-1403.
