Texas State golf competing in Louisiana tournament

LAFAYETTE, La. — Michael Carnes fired a five-under-par 67 in the first round of the 24th Annual Louisiana Classic to lead the Texas State men’s golf team to a fourth-place showing.

Carnes began the day with a four-under-par 32 through the first nine holes on the par-72, 7,141-yard course at the Oakbourne Country Club. He came back to shoot a one-under 35 on the back nane and finished the first round in fourth place.

Texas State’s Corey Roberson is tied with five other players for sixth place following the first round after he finished the first 18 holes with a three-under-par score of 69. Roberson shot a two-under par 34 on the first nine holes of the tournament and finished the back nine shooting a one-under par 35.

In addition, Carson Gibson is tied for 36th place after he finished the first round with a score of one-over-par 73, while Jeff Gerlich is tied for 42nd place after he finished the first 18 holes at two over.
Southeastern Louisiana and the host school, Louisiana-Lafayette are tied for first place after the first round with a nine-under-par team score of 279. Rice University is in third place at 282 and Texas State is in fourth place with a team score of 283. The Bobcats are two strokes ahead of Colorado and three strokes ahead of SMU.

Pelipe Velazquez of Arkansas-Little Rock, Kyle Pritchard of Louisiana Lafayette and Bryan Hackenberg of Kansas are tied for first place after finishing the first round with a six-under-par 66. Carnes is in fourth place with his 67, while Cedric Scotto of Southeastern Louisiana is in fifth place at four-under-par.

Roberson is tied with Matthew Carvell of Southeatern Louisiana, Robert Burrow of Rice, Devin Carrey of Louisiana-Lafayette and Luke Symons of Colorado for sixth place with a first-round score of 69.

I watched the TS men’s team tee off at Plum Creek not long ago. Those boys can play!
