Bales Gym structurally sound

Hays CISD staff spent Monday examining light poles at athletic facilities throughout the district after a light pole at Hays High School’s Bob Shelton Stadium snapped and landed on the roof of Oran Bales Gymnasium last Friday night.

No one was in the gym when the pole snapped. There were no injuries.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

High southerly winds were among the factors causing the pole to snap. Soon after the incident, school district officials decided to take down the remaining three light poles at Bob Shelton Stadium. Cranes arrived at about 10 p.m. Crews spent the night removing the poles.

“The good news is that the light poles at Shelton Stadium are unique to our district,” Hays CISD Interim Superintendent Carter Scherff said. “Nevertheless, we will closely examine all light poles throughout our district.”

Scherff said the school district’s engineer has declared Bales Gym structurally sound, Scherff said. The locker rooms and offices in the building will be accessible for limited use. The gymnasium itself is closed. Repair of the roof may take until the end of the summer.

Shelton Stadium will be available for use during daylight hours. Soccer games and track meets are being moved to nearby facilities or game times are being set earlier in the day, Scherff said. The Hays High School baseball field was unaffected and games will be played there as scheduled.

“We are fortunate that no one was injured in this incident,” Scherff said. “The response from our community – Kyle Volunteer Fire Department, Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Kyle Police Department – and our staff has been tremendous. We ask for your patience and flexibility as we put the pieces back together.”
