The Texas State women’s tennis team opened their Southland Conference schedule with a 6-1 loss at Northwestern State as junior Kiki Kruse scored the lone point for the Bobcats.
The Lady Demons opened the match winning the doubles point despite Texas State’s Andrea Giraldo and Lainy Chafitz winning the top doubles match 8-6 over Olga Bazhanova and Dragana Colic.
In the No. 2 doubles match Ashley Ellis and Nyssa Peele suffered their first loss of the season in doubles play as they lost their match 8-1 against Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schulz. Kruse and Mackenzie Farmer also put up a valiant effort in their doubles match against Adna Curukovic and Suncica Strkic before falling 8-5.
In singles play, Giraldo played her second straight match as Texas State’s top singles player and suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss against Curukovic.
Ellis also lost a hard-fought number two singles match against Bazhanova, who won the first set 7-6 with a 5-0 tiebreaker. Bazhanova also won the second set 7-5.
Peele suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss against Lange and Chafitz also lost a 6-4, 6-1 match against Schulz.
Kruse easily defeated Colic 6-2, 6-2 to score Texas State’s lone team point, and Farmer suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss against Daniela Posada in the number six singles match.
The loss drops Texas State’s overall record to 3-3 and the Bobcats are 0-1 in Southland Conference play heading into Sunday’s match at Central Arkansas.
