The Hays High School girls remain the only area team still alive in the high school basketball playoffs after it won its second round game Tuesday night against Manor while the San Marcos boys lost their first round game to Brenham.
The Rebels beat Manor, a District 17-4A rival, for the third time this year in a 48-44 decision in Austin. Not only did Shelby Calabrese lead the Rebels with 13 points, but she made a key three-pointer midway into the third quarter to give her team a 42-40 lead, then hit both ends of a one-and-one with 3.5 seconds left to clinch the win.
Calabrese’s presence, or lack thereof, proved to be the largest factor in the game. After she went to the bench with her third foul early in the second period, Manor went on a 20-7 run into the third quarter to take a 31-28 lead.
The Rebels improved to 32-4 overall and move on to a regional tournament for the first time since they qualified for the state tournament in 2001. Hays will play either Bay City or Angelton Friday night at Coleman Coliseum in Spring Branch. If the Rebels win that game, they will move on to the Region III championship game, with a state tournament berth at stake, Saturday afternoon.
The Rattlers fell to Brenham, 42-40, in Smithville. The Rattlers ended their season 22-11.Email | Print
