The Hays Rebels turned up another of their signature defensive showings Monday night, holding Waller to six points of fewer in three different quarters for a 56-27 win in Columbus to mark the first round of the Class 4A girls high school basketball playoffs.
The Rebels closed out their 30th win of the year with an emphatic second half, after Waller hung to within 24-17 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Rebels increased their lead to 41-23.
Shelby Calabrese led the Rebels, 30-4, with 18 points. Waller ended the year 19-19.
The Rebels will take on the winner between Humble Kingwood Park and Beaumont Ozen, who face each other tonight at Lee College. That second round game will take place some time between Thursday and Saturday.
Lehman’s first girls basketball playoff appearance in history ended quickly Monday night with a 65-39 loss to Willis.
The game ran a pattern similar to the Hays game. Lehman stayed close, down only 26-20 at half, before Willis blew the lead open.
BriAnna Garza led the Lobos with 15 points.
