The Lehman Lobos needed a home court win against Del Valle Tuesday night for a chance to make the Class 4A high school basketball playoffs. It didn’t happen.
The Lobos couldn’t stick with Del Valle in their own gym Tuesday night, falling by a 59-52 score.
The loss dropped Lehman to 13-15 overall and, more important, 3-7 in District 17-4A. By demolishing last-place Lockhart, 73-50, Tuesday night, Elgin improved to 6-4 and clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the district.
Del Valle, which is 22-8 overall and 10-0 in the league, came out smoking in the first quarter, which ended in a 16-7 lead for the only team that’s unbeaten in the district. Lehman played evenly the rest of the way, but couldn’t ever catch up.
Jozef Cortez led Del Valle with 17 points. The win enabled Del Valle to clinch at least a tie for the district title.
San Marcos began the night with an outside chance of catching Del Valle, but the Rattlers couldn’t keep up with Manor and lost, 63-42, on the road. Manor put the pressure on early and kept it on with leads of 18-9 through one quarter, 31-19 through two and 48-28 through three.
The Rattlers fell to 21-10 overall and 7-4 in the district. Though the Rattlers have clinched a playoff spot, they’ve still got a bit of work to do if they’re going to stay in third place, because Elgin is only one-half game behind them,
Manor upped its record to 23-7 overall and 8-2 in the district. The Mustangs clinched at least second place in the league.
