Pathfinder students taking dual path

STAFF REPORT

Nearly 25 percent of the daytime students at San Marcos CISD’s Pathfinder Learning Center have signed up for a dual enrollment option with Gary Job Corps, according to Pathfinder Counselor Amy Lyles.

About 20 qualified students will attend Gary Job Corps technical training classes in the morning and go to Pathfinder in the afternoon for academic course work. The program debuted this past Fall with a pilot arrangement at San Marcos High School.

Students can choose from three technical training programs with 11 trade specializations. The trade areas include the Schools of Human Services & Technology, Construction & Manufacturing, and Health Sciences.

“We are excited about the dual enrollment program with Gary Job Corps,” said Pathfinder Principal Bea Flores. “This program offers students a variety of job certifications in many fields. Graduates of this program may choose to enter the world of work immediately after graduation, or they may choose to continue their education at a college or university. The important thing to remember is that these students will have choices for successful, rewarding careers.  We are very proud of the students who have decided to embark on this journey.”

Gary counselors Fermin Gonzaba and Andrea Cunningham met with Pathfinder students and their parents last week to begin the registration process and answer questions about the programs.

One of the first students to enroll was Byanka Garcia, whose mother Buenaventura Sosa expressed enthusiasm that her daughter would simultaneously earn her high school diploma and her job certification. Garcia will study in the Human Services Program for a certification in either Security or Corrections.

On completing certifications and acquiring their high school diplomas, the dual enrollment students are often offered internship positions and/or job placement assistance. While enrolled with Gary, they also have use of recreational facilities and medical services at the Gary Job Corps site.
