City to sponsor summit meetings

The city government in San Marcos is sponsoring a series of citizen summit next week to gather views from residents about the future of San Marcos.

The city is putting on the meetings for the fifth year in a row. Dr. Richard Lewis of Round Top Consulting Associates of San Antonio will moderate six sessions in locations across the city, including the Texas State University campus.

“The views and hopes of our citizens expressed at previous visioning sessions have contributed significantly to the goal setting and priorities adopted by the city council,” San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz said. “We hope that residents from across our community will participate in this year’s sessions, and let us know, as we face changing times, what your dreams are for San Marcos.”

Narvaiz said the summits contribute significantly to the city council’s budgeting process and priorities.

The city is encouraging residents are to attend the sessions most convenient for them. The final session, on the night of Feb. 19, will be a general community summit that will include Mayor Susan Narvaiz, the city council, City Manager Rick Menchaca and senior management staff.

At that final session, to be held at 6 p.m. at the City of San Marcos Conference Center, Lewis will summarize the results of the five earlier sessions. Following the summit, the information will be assembled into a comprehensive presentation for the city council.

In addition to attending a citizen summit meeting, residents are invited to fill out an online survey linked from the City of San Marcos website at (or ). Residents may fill out one survey per person. The survey will be online from Feb. 5-Feb. 16.

Each session will last for about 90 minutes. Lewis will present an overview of activities resulting from last year’s community summit meetings. Participants will be able to provide input on eight to 10 questions through an electronic voting system on issues concerning their visions for San Marcos and strategies to reach goals.

“We also will engage participants in discussions about what actions the City of San Marcos should take to address important issues over the next two-to-five years,” Lewis said.

  1. I am really disappointed the city is not asking for input like this on the budget this year. Especially with the continued growth of our long-term obligations (debt), in the midst of the economically trying times, I would think now is the time for more citizen involvement, not less. I just don’t see real efforts being made to improve transparency in the city government.
