HOUSTON — After opening the spring with a 5-0 victory over Prairie View A&M, the Texas State women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss at No. 69-ranked Rice University.
The Owls scored won all six singles matches against the Bobcats to score five points and scored the two doubles points after edging Texas State 2-1.
Rice’s Julie Choa won a hard-fought number one singles match over Texas State’s Ashley Ellis 7-5, 6-4. Nyssa Peele fell in the number two match to Ana Guzman 6-0, 6-1, while Lainy Chafitz suffered a 6-0, 6-0 setback against Jessica Jackson in the number three match.
Texas State’s Kiki Kruse also suffered a hard-fought loss in the number-four match against Rebecca Lin 6-2, 6-4.
The Bobcats won their lone match at the number three doubles matchup when Peele and Mackenzie Farmer defeated Alex Rasch and Emily Braid 9-8 after winning a tie-breaker by the score of 7-5.
Another doubles match was decided by a tie breaker when Rebecca Lin and Jackson combined to defeat Chafitz and Kruse 9-8 in the number two doubles match after winning the tie-breaker 7-3.
The loss evens Texas State’s record to 1-1 this spring while Rice improved to 5-1 overall this spring.
Texas State return to San Marcos on Thursday, Feb. 12 when the Bobcats play their first home match against St. Edwards.
