Hispanic chamber sets awards banquet


The San Marcos Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s (SMHCC) annual awards committee has announced that the awards banquet will take place on March 21 at the Embassy Suites and City of San Marcos Conference Center.

Committee chair R.C. Thomas said the venue offers complete banquet facilities and excellent service. In addition, the Embassy Suites is offering special overnight packages for those wishing to make a complete night of the celebration.

The SMHCC also is passing along that the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) has urged U.S. President Barack Obama to include provisions for economic growth in a final stimulus package, while also removing immigration provisions that the USHCC regards as harmful.

In meetings with Obama’s economic team, USHCC representatives said the economic stimulus package should include strong inducements to help businesses regain solid footing and to preserve and create jobs

USHCC President and CEO Augustine Martinez, Monika Mantilla of the New America Alliance, Steve Denlinger of the Latin American Management Association and others expressed their concerns to Deputy Director of the National Economic Council Jason Furman.

They discussed the potential impact of several key provisions that could help small businesses endure the current economic crisis, such as gaining access to critically needed capital. Specifically, the group advocated for the creation of a direct lending program at the Small Business Administration (SBA), an extension of the expensing rule, and a number of other recommendations to ensure relief for small, Hispanic- and women-owned businesses …
