The Hays CISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to hire Michelle Chae as principal of Simon Middle School this week.
Chae is principal of Woodland Acres Middle School in Galena Park ISD. Simon Middle School, located about seven miles east of Interstate-35 on SH 150 next to Hemphill Elementary School. is scheduled to open for the August 2009-10 school year.
The school will open in August with a capacity of 850, but will only hold 500 students in its first year. The school will draw from the district’s far southeast, including students from Wallace and Chapa Middle Schools, as well as the Green Pastures subdivision on the east side, where students presently attend Dahlstrom Middle School.
The school is named after San Marcos car dealer Delvin “Red” Simon, a 1942 graduate of Kyle High School who later served on the Kyle school board and served as the first president of the Hays CISD trustees when the school district consolidated from the Buda, Kyle and Wimberley school districts in 1967.
“Those three communities (Kyle, Buda and Wimberley) were very diverse communities and at first it was a fragile existence,” said Hays CISD Trustee Ralph Pfluger, who also served on that original Hays school board. “He established the success of that school board that put us on the road to where we are today, and I’m not so sure we would not have done that without Simon. He left a legacy here, and naming the new middle school after him would be appropriate.”
Chae served as principal of both Woodland Acres Middle School and Woodland Acres Elementary School from August 2005 to June 2007. Since June 2007, she has been principal of Woodland Acres Middle School. She earned her bachelor’s degree and teacher certification at the University of Northern Iowa, and her master’s degree in administration and supervision from University of Houston.Email | Print
