SHMS places four in state debate meet

The debate team at San Marcos High School is putting up a record-setting performance this year, qualifying four students the Texas Forensics Association state championships in March.

San Marcos High School has never qualified that many people for the state meet.

Last weekend, senior Brooke Morgan excelled at a meet in Pasadena, taking sixth place in poetry, second place in dramatic interpretation and first place in prose. Her dramatic interpretation performance gave her enough points to qualify for the state meet.

Other San Marcos High School students qualified for the state meet are Kelley Mathis, Irene Morse and Henry Finch. Several more students are working through the next month attempting to join them at the state meet.

Morse continued to dominate at the Pasadena meet by placing first in foreign extemporaneous speaking. Mathis finished second in student congress.

San Marcos also comprised half of the impromptu finals round, thanks to a second place performance by senior Nijah Adams, a third place showing by sophomore Brittany Howard, and a sixth place finish by senior Marcos Manrique. Junior Ben Painton inched closer to a state qualification in humorous interpretation by placing fifth.

The team will continue working through a busy stretch of four consecutive tournament weekends coming up. From there, the team sets its focus on championship tournaments throughout the final months of the school year. Next step – Saturday’s tournament at Round Rock High School.
