Texas State women fall at Sam Houston


Gabriell Mattox, who often leads the Texas State women’s basketball team in scoring, topped 20 points for the first time in her career Wednesday night. But it turned out to not be a good omen for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats lost, 78-63 at Sam Houston State, falling to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the Southland Conference. Texas State is 0-7 on the road. Sam Houston upped its marks to 5-11 and 2-1.

Entering the game, the Bobcats had won ten in a row against Sam Houston State.

Sam Houston went on an 8-0 run for a 13-6 lead early in the first half and the Bobcats never went back ahead. The Bearkats held a 34-30 lead at halftime before Texas State pulled up to a 36-36 tie early in the second half. But Sam Houston took quick control of the game and built its biggest lead at 67-50 well into the second half.

Texas State shot 34.8 percent from the floor, compared with 49.1 percent for Sam Houston State.

Whitney Smith starred for Sam Houston, scoring 11 points with 12 rebounds.

Mattox led all scorers with 22 points and added 10 rebounds. Kim Cessna added 14 points for Texas State.

The Bobcats next play on Saturday at Lamar (2 p.m.). The game has been selected for telecast on the Southland Conference Television Network.
