Texas State back in RecycleMania

Texas State University students, faculty and staff will once again participate in the National Recycling Coalition’s RecycleMania competition, which is a 10-week contest involving more than 400 colleges and universities from Jan.18 to March 28.

The National Recycling Coalition said the contest collected more than 58.6 million pounds of recyclable material during the 2008 competition. The contest, which began in 2001 as a friendly competition between two high school recycling coordinators in Ohio, has grown to more than four million students, according to the National Recycling Coalition.

Participating schools turn in weekly results to the RecycleMania website in hopes of being crowned champion. Texas State will submit weights for paper, cardboard, plastics and aluminum.

Outdoor receptacles for plastic bottles and aluminum cans are located throughout the campus. There are also a number of indoor receptacles for plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper.

The campus recycling center accepts a wide variety of recyclable materials, including textbooks. A complete list of accepted materials can be found on the center’s website at

For more information on how to get involved in the campus contest, or to request a pick up for a large amount of paper or cardboard, contact Texas State’s recycling center at (512) 245-7733.
