Bobcats try move up in women's basketball

STAFF REPORT

After evening itself in the Southland Conference with a 69-65 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday night, the Texas State women’s basketball team will go for two in a row at Strahan Coliseum today against Central Arkansas.

Meanwhile, the Texas State men’s team seeks redemption today at Central Arkansas after a putrid 89-64 loss Wednesday night at A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bobcats must be aching to rid themselves of a 25-point conference loss on the road after five straight non-conference wins at home.

The Texas State women play at home today (2 p.m.) against Central Arkansas. The Bobcats are 7-7 overall and 1-1 in the league after recovering from their 67-53 loss at Texas-Arlington in the conference opener with the win Wednesday night at home.

Gabriell Mattox and Ashley Cole combined for 29 points against A&M-Corpus Christi. Mattox finished with 16 points and five rebounds, while Cole ended the game with 13 points and four rebounds. Both are averaging 11.7 points per game over the last three games to lead the team.

The Bobcats lead the league in scoring with an average of 64.7 points per game, but they also run ninth in scoring defense by allowing 68.0 points per game.

Texas State ran to a 37-18 halftime lead against Corpus Christi, but the Islanders fought to within 60-55 with 5:33 left in the game. The Bobcats held off the Islanders for the victory.

The Texas men’s team spent Wednesday night trying to fight off total embarrassment at A&M-Corpus, which sprang to an 80-50 lead well into the second half.

The Bobcats will try to recover from that debacle at Central Arkansas, which finished last year 4-12 in the Southland Conference. At stake for the Bobcats by now is the notion that they could beat anybody on the road. They are 0-5 in road games this year.
