News8Austin takes a look at downtown San Marcos’ revitalization, noting the progress since 1988 when 15 buildings on the square were vacant.  The Texas Historical Commission is holding its “Preservation and the Balanced Community” symposium at Texas State University today . . . The Hays Free Press has more on the death of an inmate in the Hays County jail on Dec. 8. Jailers found Torrey Smith, 32, dead in his cell but have been cryptic about the cause. The man’s family wants answers, San Marcos attorney Novert Morales said. . . . In case you missed it, Texas State alum John Sharp has filed paperwork to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison, who plans to run for governor. Houston mayor Bill White is also in the race.
