Cemetery friends save markers by saving trees

Since its founding in 2003, the Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery has raised more than $90,000, largely for the living. The trees, that is.

With those funds, the organization has professionally trimmed trees in the cemetery and relieved many of ball moss. It’s not just cosmetic, said Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery President Shannon FitzPatrick.

“It is a matter of protection, as well as beauty,” FitzPatrick said. “Distressed trees and falling tree limbs – in some instances entire trees – threaten the historic grave markers in the cemetery. There is no funding available in the city coffers to replace damaged markers, even if they could be replaced.”

FitzPatrick said the organization recently signed a contract authorizing an additional $10,000 of work on the trees in the cemetery.

The Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery will meet next week to elect new officers, review the past year and discuss plans for 2009. The public is invited to the meeting on Jan. 22 (5:30 p.m.) at the San Marcos Public Library.

The organization seeks to promote the resources, services and historic significance of the San Marcos Cemetery, to raise funds for maintaining and improving the cemetery and to support volunteers who assist the San Marcos Cemetery Commission with ongoing projects.

In addition to the election of new officers for the group, the Jan. 22 meeting will help launch the organization’s 2009 fundraising initiatives, which are always amplified by the annual From Here to Eternity 5-K Walk/Run. With assistance from the San Marcos Runners Club, the fifth annual walk/run last October raised more than $2,500.

Those wanting more information about the organization, such as how to make a financial contribution or get involved as a volunteer, may call Carmen Imel at (512) 754-0490.
