Texas State student dies in shooting believed to be accidental

The shooting death Wednesday night of a 21-year-old-man is believed to be accidental, San Marcos police said today.

Jon Ryan Paysse, of Tow, Texas died after being airlifted to Brackenridge Hospital after the shooting occurred at the University Heights II Apartments on East River Ridge Drive in San Marcos.

“At this point, we believe it was an accidental shooting,” Police Chief Howard E. Williams said in a written statement. “Once our investigation is concluded, we will refer the case to the Hays County District Attorney’s office for presentation to a grand jury.”

No charges have been filed or are expected, Williams said.

Police were called at 6:49 p.m. Jan. 7 to the University Heights Apartments. Paysse suffered a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported by Air Evac to the hospital in Austin where he was pronounced dead.

Paysse was a junior at Texas State University.
