Public session slated Thursday on animal control ordinance

From the city of San Marcos

The first meeting of a series of public meetings to explain the new Animal Control ordinance in San Marcos will be held Thursday, January 8 at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins. The public is invited to attend.

The program will also be televised live on Time Warner Channel 10 and Grande Communications Channel 16 and video-streamed on the City’s web site.

The other public meetings on the ordinance will be held Monday, January 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, 630 E. Hopkins and Saturday, February 7, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

The City Council adopted an updated Animal Control ordinance in December which will take effect on April 1, 2009.  The Animal Services staff will hold a series of public meetings in January and February before the new ordinance takes effect to help residents understand the new rules.

The new rules, aimed at conforming with state law and promoting responsible pet ownership, were adopted by the San Marcos City Council in December.

The ordinance changes a variety of local rules:

The ordinance was recommended by the Animal Services Advisory Board after several months of review. The City of San Marcos contracts with Hays County and Kyle to support the San Marcos Animal Shelter, expanded last year to take in animals from across Hays County.
