County commissioners appear likely to return Kyle mayor to CAMPO board

County Judge Elizabeth Sumter indicated today she would back down from naming a political ally to the powerful Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization board, which helps allocate tens of millions of dollars in transportation funds.

In the commissioners court’s last regular session on Dec. 22, Sumter moved that the seat reserved for small Hays County cities be filled by Woodcreek Mayor Gloria Whitehead, a former Hays County Democratic Party chair.

The appointment would have ousted Kyle Mayor Mike Gonzalez, who replaced former Buda Mayor John Trube on the CAMPO board in July 2007. Sumter’s motion died without a second.

At commissioners court today, Sumter sponsored a discussion on setting a process for filling the county’s position on the regional board. But the guidelines, she said, should start in 2010.

“I think Mike should probably continue on” as a CAMPO board member, said Sumter, who sits on the CAMPO board as does San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz.

The guidelines call for asking each of the county’s cities, except San Marcos which has its own seat, to nominate representatives who would serve two-year terms. Sumter also wants the court to appoint an alternate.
