STAFF REPORTRiding a three-game winning streak, the Texas State men’s basketball team faces one more tune-up before starting its Southland Conference schedule next Saturday.
The Bobcats demolished tiny Schreiner University, 98-57, Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum. After tonight’s game (7 p.m.) at home against Northern Colorado, the Bobcats will open the Southland Conference at home against Texas-Arlington on January 10 at 4 p.m.
The Bobcats lost, 105-93, at Northern Colorado on Nov. 29. Texas-Arlington is the defending Southland Conference Tournament champion.
Texas State started slowly against Schreiner, making only six of its first 19 field goal attempts to capture a mere 16-9 lead in the first eight minutes. But an 18-9 run just before half pushed the Bobcats to a 42-25 lead at intermission.
Then, the Bobcats went off on a 33-9 run to start the second half, triggered by John Bowman’s slam dunk. Brent Benson, who scored 16 in the game for Texas State, notched 12 of them during the big rally in the first 8:20 of the second half.
Brandon Bush led Texas State with 18 points, adding eight rebounds. Cameron Johnson scored 11 and Dylan Moseley threw in a season-high 10 points from the bench. Ty Gough totaled eight points, leading the Bobcats with 11 rebounds.
The Bobcats improved to 6-6 overall. Schreiner fell to 1-9.
