Hays County Community Emergency Response Team gets LCRA grant with help from PEC

The Hays County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) recently received a $20,643 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority to help renovate a donated diesel bus into a fully functional incident support vehicle. The upgraded vehicle will allow CERT volunteers to provide local response teams with communications assistance and office equipment during emergencies.

Hays County CERT is a nonprofit organization of nearly 100 volunteers that provides multifunctional support during disasters and other critical times of need, primarily in the Hays County area. In addition, the team educates the public about basic emergency response skills and how to prepare for disasters. Currently, Hays County CERT is using a diesel bus donated by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office to provide mobile support. Remodeling this bus, including adding necessary equipment, tools and technology, will allow the team to provide a rest and rehabilitation area for emergency response teams during disasters and other situations, as well as provide improved communications, mapping and photo distribution.

“We are extremely appreciative of LCRA’s generosity,” said Hays County CERT director Lewis Smith. “Its grant makes possible the expansion of CERT emergency services in support of Hays County citizens and first responders. We also greatly appreciate the hard work and support of PEC for its help with the grant process.”

Pedernales Electric’s Community Relations Department assisted Hays County CERT in writing and researching the grant request submitted to LCRA. PEC’s grant writing assistance program has helped many local government and nonprofit organizations serving PEC members to obtain needed funds for projects, purchases and operational development.
