The local girls high school basketball teams in District 17-4A all open league games this week, with San Marcos tipping it off at home tonight against Del Valle (7 p.m.).
The Hays and Lehman girls teams face each other tonight at Lehman (7 p.m.). Both are 1-0 in the league after winning district openers Monday night.
Meanwhile, the boys teams from all three schools continue tuning up for the district grind, which begins in January.
The Hays girls followed up their runner-up performance in the Rebel Classic with a 55-25 drenching of Lockhart at home Monday night. The Rebels built a 34-11 lead in the second quarter, easing their record up to 16-2 overall and 1-0 in the district. Shelby Calabrese led the Rebels with 21 points.
Lehman improved to 9-9 overall and 1-0 in the league with a 48-38 win at Elgin Monday night. The Lobos quickly built a 20-point lead in the first half and stayed on top. BriAnna Garza led the Lobos, and all scorers, with 16 points.
San Marcos is 12-7 overall following its 2-2 performance last weekend at the Rebel Classic.
On the boys side, Lehman goes to Austin Lanier tonight after a commanding performance at home Monday night against Navarro. The Lobos scored 29 in the first quarter on their way to an 85-55 win. Lehman put five players in double figures, led by Kenny Weber’s 18 points.
The San Marcos boys team went to the Harlandale Tournament this weekend with a 9-5 record after a 63-61 win Tuesday night in the Snake Pit against San Antonio Lanier. Cameron Austin led the Rattlers with 27 points, including a three that broke a 52-52 tie and started the Rattlers on their way in the fourth quarter. Following the Harlandale Tournament, the Rattlers will play Seguin on Dec. 23 in the Snake Pit.
Seguin hung a 79-57 loss on the Hays boys team (4-6) Monday night at Oran Bales Gymnasium. The Rebels never came closer than a 21-15 deficit early in the second quarter. Ed Franco and Vince Sorrells each scored 13 points for the Rebels, who are playing this weekend in the Smithville Tournament before playing New Braunfels Canyon at home on Dec. 22 (7 p.m.).Email | Print
