The following is a schedule of events at the San Marcos Public Library through February 2009.

ToddlerTime

Friday, January 2- The San Marcos Public Library offers Toddler Storytime for the best in children’s stories, songs, and fantastic fun! Ages 6 mos. to 3 years are invited to attend at 10:15 a.m.

Free Computer Class

Wednesday, January 7-The San Marcos Public Library offers free computer classes in Computer Basics, Internet Skills, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Call 393-8200 to register.

Beekeeping Workshop

Wednesday, January 7- Join the San Marcos Area Bee Wranglers at the San Marcos Public Library for a 4-week workshop on beekeeping. The four, 1-hour sessions on January 7, 14, 21, & 28 at 7:00 p.m. will cover bee biology, basic equipment for beekeeping, obtaining bees, honey production, honey plants in Central Texas, and many other bee related topics. A text book will be available to purchase at the first session for $10.00. Call 393-8200 to register, space is limited.

Friday, January 9- Certified Sivananda Yoga instructor Tina Baumgartner offers free yoga classes at the San Marcos Public Library at 5:00 p.m. Wear loose clothing and bring a towel or blanket to sit on. Everyone is welcome!

The Art of Cooking Up a Great Resume…A Recipe for Success

Saturday, January 10-Job seekers are invited to attend a free resume workshop at the San Marcos Public Library on Saturday, January 10 at 10:30 a.m. Resume Coach Sharon Spector will lead the workshop attendees through the various steps involved in creating a winning resume.

Puppet Show

Tuesday, January 13- The San Marcos Public Library puppeteers present a favorite holiday show, Tortoise and the Hare, for children ages 2 and up. The shows will be presented at 10:00 & 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

French and Spanish Classes

Thursday, January 15-The San Marcos Public Library offers free Spanish classes on Thursdays at 4:00 & 7:00 p.m. and French classes at 10:00 a.m. Classes will meet weekly until March 12. There will be no charge to attend the class and the Spanish textbook may be purchased at the library for $20.00 Call 393-8200 to register.

Tuesday, January 20- Everyone is invited to the San Marcos Public Library’s monthly concert featuring Gypsy Moon at 7:00 p.m. Gypsy swing, a blend of Gypsy virtuosity and American jazz. Full of rhythm and romance, this music will soothe your soul and excite your senses.

Great Books Discussion Group

Monday, January 26- Interested in great literature? The Great Books Discussion Group meets each month at 7:00 p.m. to read and discuss selected literary works. The January reading is Distributive Justice by John Rawls. Call 392-6470 for details. New members are always welcome!

Free Income Tax Assistance

Monday, February 2-AARP Volunteers are offering free Income Tax Assistance for the elderly and low-income beginning February 2 at the San Marcos Public Library at 625 E. Hopkins St. Hours of assistance are on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and Mondays from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Taxpayers who utilize this free, walk-in service should bring with them a copy of last year’s income tax return, their social security card, a photo ID, the amount of stimulus package rebate received, and any other tax-related information. E-filing will be offered and those who wish to have their refund direct deposited should bring their bank’s routing number and their bank account number. Tax Aid will continue until April 13. The library also has copies of the standard tax forms and instructions.

Free Concert at the Public Library

Tuesday, February 3- Everyone is invited to the San Marcos Public Library’s monthly concert featuring Paul Wilson at 7:00 p.m. Wilson is a veteran songwriter of over 20 years, composing lyrics and melodies in the traditions of rock, pop, and folk. He is heavily influenced by artists of the 60s and 70s, his style is unique yet has a quality that is timeless.

Get a Home of Your Own: A Free Seminar

Monday, February 2-Anyone who is interested in purchasing a home for the first time is invited to a free workshop about the home buying process at the San Marcos Public Library on Monday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. Knowledgeable experts can help you discover the ins and outs of the home purchase process from making an offer to closing the deal. This free workshop is sponsored by the San Marcos First-Time Home Buyer Program, the San Marcos Housing Authority, 1836 Realty, and Inspecttex Inspections.
