SMHS Singers sizzles with recognitions: three compete for All-State, seven join National Youth Choir

The “high fives” are frequent occurrences in the hallways of San Marcos High School, as the SMCISD Choral Department continues to rack up the awards and recognitions. The November 24th competitions at Bowie High School in Austin resulted in three choir students moving on to the final round of the Texas All-State Choir Auditions. The students going on to compete in Area competitions in San Antonio are Gabe DeLeon, Katy Whitbeck, and Josh Contreras.

According to Choral Director Helen Miers, the students had to make the top five chairs out of 20 in their choral section to move up to Area. Whitbeck made 1st chair in Soprano; DeLeon made 2nd chair in Bass; and Contreras made 2nd chair in Tenor 2. Regional competitors from SMHS also included Anna Rivas, Layne Cape, Madeline Bell, Sarah Williams, and Jonathan Flores.

In addition, Miers announced that four more SMHS students have been selected to the National Youth Choir that will perform at the National American Choral Directors Association convention in Oklahoma City on March 4-7, 2009, bringing the total to seven SMHS choir members. Katy Whitbeck, Layne Cape, Josh Contreras, and Paul Hill will join classmates Regan Keithly, Gabe DeLeon, and Sabrina Cano in the National Youth Choir performances.
