The basketball season is off to a roaring start at Hays High School, where the two varsity basketball teams started with a combined 11-1 record.
The Hays boys team is 3-0 after a 66-40 homecourt win against Lampasas Monday night. Guard Ed Franco led the way with 24 points and center Ed Sorrells added 16.
The Hays girls team was 8-1 after a 48-39 win against Lake Travis Tuesday night. Shelby Calabrese led Hays with 12 points.
At San Marcos High School, the boys team improved to 2-1 with a home-opening win of 69-59. The Rattlers put the game away with an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter, turning a 50-46 deficit into a 57-50 lead. Lee Bryant scored 12 points for the Rattlers, while Ben Schneider added 10.
The San Marcos girls team fell to 4-3 after a 44-43 loss Monday night at home to Crockett. Jasmine Williams scored 20 for San Marcos.
