The San Marcos High School Speech and Debate Team scored a huge victory the weekend of November 7-8, 2008, with junior Kelley Mathis leading the way with a State qualification in Student Congress. The team traveled far as they competed at the Calallen High School Invitational Tournament on that Friday and Saturday. The team took 5th place overall in the tournament out of 22 top teams from around the state.
Several students had distinguished performances that led the team to the overall victory. The most exciting of all those victories belonged to Mathis, who by virtue of her 1st place victory in Congress, has qualified for the Texas Forensics Association State Championships in March.
Other students are also well on their way to state qualifications, thanks to their outstanding effort at the Calallen tournament. Senior Marcos Manrique, was also a 1st place winner in his event: Impromptu Speaking. Mathis took 3rd place in this event as well. Henry Finch and Irene Morse (both juniors) advanced to the quarterfinals and semifinals rounds, respectively, in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Ben Painton, a junior, competed in Humorous Interpretation and finished in 6th place. Manrique and Mathis were joined by juniors Julie Munoz and Jesus Aguilar as Congress finalists. In Extemporaneous Speaking, Morse won 3rd place, Greg De La Iglesia (a senior) took 4th, and Finch won 6th place. Brooke Morgan (a senior) also made finals in Poetry, winning 4th place.
The team is now preparing for post-Thanksgiving competition. They travel to Bay City High School December 5-6 and to Austin’s Westlake High School on December 12-13.
