Seeing a chance to win the Southland Conference regular season soccer championship, the Texas State Bobcats worked quickly Sunday, scoring two goals in the first four minutes on their way to a 7-0 win against Central Arkansas at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The Bobcats won the top seed at this weekend’s SLC Tournament in Lake Charles, LA, with a 7-0-2 league record (11-3-4 overall). The win marked the first time Texas State has won the Southland Conference without a loss in the league.
Britney Curry scored two minutes into the match, reaching the net from 10 yards out. Less than two minutes later, Rikki Padia went one-on-one with Central Arkansas goalkeeper Heather Joye and beat her on the right side.
Curry and Padia each scored again in the first half as the Bobcats took a 6-0 lead at the intermission. Curry’s second goal put her at 12 for the year, placing her second on the school’s all-time single-season scoring list. Padia’s second goal equaled her scoring output for three years entering the game.
“The team came out ready to play today,” Texas State head coach Kat Conner said. “Central Arkansas was ready for the match, but we came out on a mission. We were able to get two quick goals that set the tone for the rest of the match and the whole team put forth a great effort.”
Goaltender Mandy Mawyer recorded the win for Texas State, raising her record this year to 5-1-2.
Texas State will play its first SLC Tournament game Friday against the winner of a Thursday match between Stephen F. Austin and Southeastern Louisiana.Email | Print
