SMCISD again earns state's top rating for fiscal responsibility

The San Marcos CISD received official notification of its final 2008 School FIRST rating: “Superior Achievement.” The School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) accountability system was development by the Texas Education Agency in response to Senate Bill 875 of the 76th Session of the Texas Legislature in 1999. This is the sixth year of the School FIRST program, and SMCISD has earned the Superior Achievement rating each of those six years. The 2008 rating is based on information from the 2006-2007 school year. According to Assistant Superintendent of Business & Support Services Mike Abild, the School FIRST accountability rating system assigns one of four financial accountability ratings to Texas school districts:

o The highest rating being “Superior Achievement”
o Followed by “Above Standard Achievement”
o “Standard Achievement” and
o “Substandard Achievement.”

Districts with serious data quality problems may receive the additional rating of “Suspended Due to Data Quality.”

After notification of the final School FIRST rating, San Marcos CISD announced and held a public meeting on October 20, 2008, to distribute a final financial management report that explained the district’s performance under each of the School FIRST indicators and the district’s rating.
