SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State completes 3-0 sweep on the week in conference play after beating visiting McNeese State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) at Strahan Coliseum. Tonight’s win marks the 10th straight SLC win by the Bobcats this season. Texas State improves to 18-12, 11-1 SLC, while McNeese State drops to 8-15, 5-5 SLC.In the first set it was all Melinda Cave who had eight digs in the first set alone, to add to her three kills. Texas State’s biggest lead of the set came at, 23-13. The Cowgirls rallied for five more points before the Bobcats took the set. Lawrencia Brown had the set winning kill, off a set from Shelbi Irvin to give the Bobcats the win.
The Bobcats tallied five service aces in the second set to boost their offensive momentum. Texas State had the Cowgirls down to 22-7 at one point for their biggest lead of the set. McNeese State’s Nicole Bowden attempted to get the Cowgirls back on the ball after two kills, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Bobcats won, 25-12.
Lawrencia Brown put on the libero uniform in the third set for the first time this season to switch up the Texas State look. Brittany Collins had back-to-back service aces to bring the set to, 23-14. Jessica Weynand tallied four kills in the third set, including the match winning kill, to help lead the Bobcats to a 25-18 win. The Bobcats hit a .414 in the third set for their highest set average of the night.
Cave finished the night with five kills, two blocks and 11 assists. Collins had 19 assists and Irvin had 15. Emily Jones Wilkes and Weynand led all Bobcats with nine kills each.
The teams combined for 10 aces tonight, with Irvin leading the way with four. Once again the Bobcats were able to hold their opponents to a hitting percentage of .300 or below, with the Cowgirls finishing the game with an average of .138. Texas State finished the match with a hitting percentage of .340.
The Bobcats hit the road for the last time this season before the conference tournament as they prepare to travel to Lamar and Sam Houston State next week.
Texas State will play Lamar on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:00pm CT. The last time the two teams faced was earlier this season in Strahan, where the Bobcats beat the Cardinals 3-1. When Texas State played Sam Houston State the outcome was the same as with the Cardinals, 3-1. The Bobcats will play in Huntsville with a start time of 4:00pm.
