The Hays County Commissioners Court adopted a Proclamation declaring October 26, 2008, as Livestrong Challenge Day in Hays County. The Livestrong Challenge is the signature fund raiser event for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The Foundation was founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong. They have since raised more than $250 million in the fight against cancer.Austin, Texas, will be participating in the event for its 12th year and Dripping Springs will take part in the action. In Austin the Livestrong Challenge 5K run/walk will begin and end in the Capitol steps on Oct. 25, while Dripping Springs will have 10, 45, 65, and 90 mile rides on Oct. 26, beginning and ending at the Dripping Springs High school. The events begin at 7:30 a.m. and the public is invited to attend.
The court also considered pay raises for election workers.
“I am asking the court to increase the pay we are paying our election workers,” said Hays County Elections Administrator Joyce Cowan.
Cowan highlighted the importance of this year’s election and said 134 extra hours have been made available than in years past for early voting in the general election, bringing the total hours to 454. She asked the court to approve from $7.00 an hour to $10.00 for all early voting clerks, central count workers, and election day Judges. She also asked for an increase for Alternate Judges to $9.00 and hour and election clerks to $8.00 an hour.
The court thanked Cowan for all the work put forth towards this election and unanimously approved the authorization of the Elections Office to increase the pay of election workers.
Early voting for Hays County is estimated to cost $21,000, with other political subsidiaries to share in some of this cost.
Commissioners Court will not meet on November 4 or November 11.
