Rattlers face last-chance showdown with Alamo Heights

STAFF REPORT

Believe it or not, the football schedule is actually getting easier for the San Marcos Rattlers.

The Rattlers will return to Bobcat Stadium Friday night against Alamo Heights, which is ranked only No. 3 among sub-Class 5A high school teams by the San Antonio Express-News. In the last three weeks, the Rattlers have played No. 1 Steele and No. 2 Kerrville Tivy.

Unfortunately for the Rattlers, their front-loaded District 27-4A schedule would almost certainly put an early end to their playoff hopes if they can’t prevail against Alamo Heights.

The Ratters are 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the district. Even if they could finish out their season with wins against Clemens, Boerne and Seguin – which, according to the standings, are their easiest games in the league – a loss to Alamo Heights would put them too far behind go catch up.

San Marcos is coming off its best performance in the district season, a 42-28 loss last Friday night at point-scoring powerhouse Kerrville Tivy. Departing from the form of their earlier league losses to Steele and New Braunfels Canyon, the Rattlers lost no fumbles against Tivy and stayed competitive well into the second half. However, the San Marcos defense also allowed Tivy 523 total yards while the team gave up at least 40 points for the third straight game.

Offensively, the Rattlers produced 422 total yards against Tivy, including 327 yards on the ground.

San Marcos will have to be most concerned with stopping Alamo Heights quarterback Drew Allen, who rates fifth in the San Antonio area with 1,390 passing yards while throwing 13 touchdown passes against only two interceptions.

The Mules (4-2, 3-0) are tied on top of District 27-4A with Steele (6-0, 3-0) and Tivy (5-1, 3-0). The Rattlers are tied at the bottom of the league with Boerne (3-3, 0-3) and Seguin (0-3, 1-5).
