The Texas State volleyball team improved to 3-1 in the Southland Conference last weekend with two resounding home court victories.
The Bobcats beat Sam Houston State 3-1 (25-14, 25-10, 16-25, 25-13) on Oct. 2, then followed that performance two days later by beating Lamar, 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 25-27, 25-13).
The victories moved Texas State (10-11 overall) into second place in the Southland’s West Division, barely behind Texas-San Antonio. The Bobcats lost at UTSA, 3-1, on Sept. 27.
Emily Jones Wilkes led the way for Texas State to earn Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time this season. Jones Wilkes notched seven kills and no errors against Sam Houston and 13 kills with one error against Lamar. Jones leads the league in hitting percentage at .459 after one performance in which she hit .866 (13 for 15).
The Bobcats are playing tonight at Houston, to which they lost a five-set tussle at the Time Warner Invitational in Austin last month. Jessica Weynand, Lawrencia Brown and Melinda Cave all registered double-doubles in that match.
Brown led the Bobcats in the victory against Sam Houston with 12 kills and eight digs, while Jones Wilkes and Amy Weigle both hit .467. Weigle also had three block assists and Jones Wilkes had four block assists and one block solo.
Against Lamar, three Texas State players registered double-doubles. Brown finished with 14 kills and 21 digs, while Weynand had 10 kills and 13 digs, and Shelbi Irvin had 21 assists and 11 digs.Email | Print
