SMCISD parent meeting: Gifted/Talented Education program overview

On October 9, 2008, an open meeting will be held for San Marcos CISD parents who are interested in information on the district’s Gifted and Talented Education Program. The overview will be presented from 6-7 pm in the large training room of the Lamar Annex Building, 500 West Hutchison. According to Coordinator Judy Mitchell, this meeting is for parents of children in grades K-12 who are not currently served in the Gifted and Talented Education Program. The agenda will include:

o The definition of Gifted and Talented
o Discussion of the nomination and selection procedures
o Testing instruments used for identification and
o Program design and services.

A translator will be available to assist with Spanish translation. The deadline for parent/family nominations is November 1, 2008.

  1. I have never been a big fan of the term “Gifted and Talented.” It smacks of elitism and implies that anyone not in the program are UNgifted and NONtalented. Nothing could be further from the truth as talents lie in many areas that often do not conform with testing systems.
