Nacogdoches, Texas- The Texas State women’s tennis team opened their 2008-09 season with a pair of second-place finishes, two fourth-place showings and four fifth-place finishes at the Stephen F. Austin Fall Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25-26.
Senior Lainy Chafitz was the top singles player for the Bobcats as she was the runner-up among the No. Five singles players as she fell to Sharon Makahnya 5-7 (6), 6-0 on Saturday. She began the tournament beating Ashley Akin of North Texas 6-2, 6-4 and Patricia Manzur of Sam Houston State 6-2, 6-3 in a semifinal match.
Texas State’s No. 2 doubles team of Katie O’Riley and Kruse also finished in second place after falling 8-6 against Ashrafi and Kuroda of Lamar.
O’Riley also recorded a fourth-place finish among number four singles players after she fell to D. Posada of Northwestern State. Nowland and Mackenzie Farmer also had a fourth place finish as Texas State’s No. Three doubles team.
Texas State’s No. One singles player Ali Giraldo, No. 2 singles player Nyssa Peele, No. three singles player A. Ellis and No. Six singles player MacKenzie Farmer all finished in fifth place.
The Bobcats continue their fall schedule at the ITA Regional Tournament in Fort Worth Oct. 23-27. 0ju
