Roberson takes second for Bobcats in Maryland golf tourney

STAFF REPORT

CAMBRIDGE, MD – The Texas State men’s golf team opened with a promising performance, finishing eighth in the 18-team Maryland Intercollegiate Tournament as senior Corey Roberson tied for the second-place individual finish.

Roberson, a Tyler native, carded a six-under 136 in the 36-hole meet, which was shortened from 54 holes at River Marsh Golf Course because of Tropical Storm Hanna. Roberson started the tournament with a 67, followed by a 69.

Roberson and David Lingmerth of Arkansas finished in a tie behind Arkansas’ Ethan Tracy, who took the medal after shooting a ten-under 132, including a course-record 64 in the opening round.

“(Corey) Roberson played spectacular,” Texas State coach Shane Howell said. “His performance would have won most weeks, but, unfortunately, he went up against a record performance by Ethan Tracy.”

The Bobcats shot a combined 579 (280, 299), finishing one stroke behind seventh-place Virginia and five strokes behind fourth-place North Carolina. Arkansas won the tournament with a 24-under 544.

Of the remaining Bobcats, Carson Gibson finished 17th with a combined 143, followed by Jeff Gerlich (32nd, 146), Michael Carnes (69th, 154) and Andrew Bryant (90th, 165).

“This was a great start to the season,” Howell said. “We have a lot of talent this year and it showed in Maryland. We competed against some very strong teams and beat quite a few of them.”

The Bobcats return to action Sept. 26-27 for the William H. Tucker Tournament in Albuquerque, NM.
