Wright speaks to Kiwanis, turns focus to SMU

Thursday, the Kiwanis of San Marcos held their weekly meeting at Grin’s Restaurant at noon. The group led by President Pam Cook hosted speaker Brad Wright, Head Football Coach at Texas State University. He was a guest of member Bobby Patton.

Wright discussed the teams recent win over Angelo State and very happy about the student support at the home opener at Bobcat Stadium. Wright was a student here and football player in 1977, he was a team leader and he noted that former Texas State coached were a big influence in his life. He noted, “I was too slow and small at Texas State but being coached by Miller and Wacker was great.”

He spoke about trying to build a real football program here; he said I don’t want to come in here win and leave. He said he took a pay cut to leave coaching at New Braunfels Canyon to come back to Texas State. Wright talked about upgrading the defense with new coach Mike Bugar from Southern Miss. He will bring the intensity back to the Bobcats.

He said, “We are the slowest team in the Southland Conference but our discipline, toughness, and explosion will win games for us.”

The speaker also noted player Ray Parker, Jr. for his toughness and leadership. Parker’s father is also Ray Parker, Jr.; he gained international fame as a guitarist, songwriter, producer and recording artist. Parker is known primarily for writing the theme song to the motion picture Ghostbusters.

The team will now turn its focus to Southern Methodist University in Dallas this weekend. The team will face first year coach June Jones former Head Coach at the University of Hawaii. The Mustangs lost in their first game to Rice in Houston. The coach noted that the defense under Bugar will use many different rush packages to confuse Freshman Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, a former Katy standout last season.

Wright said, “The key to beating SMU is our pass rush, which is the key to beating a passing team. We will establish the rush versus SMU.”

In Kiwanis news, the group recognized member McBride Wilson, Jr. for his 71st birthday on September 17th and Tracy Hermann and her husband will be celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary on September 22nd, 2008.

Also a representative from the San Marcos Hill School was in attendance and wanting more information in starting a Key Club at his school.

The Kiwanis also recognized members and friends which made the flag program a success on the Labor Day holiday. The members will also be posting flags upcoming on September 11th in remembrance of 9/11. The group has also started its own blog and it is available at http://www.kiwanis-sanmarcos-tx.blogspot.com/.The group noted that September 18th at 6 p.m. they will hold their annual Installation Banquet at the Price Senior Center.
