While most fans are tailgating and focusing on the big game versus Angelo State some Bobcat players have a different focus. They are members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; they meet at the end zone complex a few hours before kickoff.
The meeting started with prayer for the program, the speaker Eric Perucca, asked the players, “How many of you are nervous, how many of you are nervous about doing it right?” Several players responded and they discussed the team and their role within the team as an individual.
Perucca works for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a south central representative. He also worked at Westlake High School.
He also shared his personal beliefs and told the group as a Christian there should be no wavering, we must believe in what we are doing here. You can not take one player off the field it takes eleven. Not one position is better than the other, as Christians we must put others above us.
Since 1954, nationally the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in America. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.
The group refers to seven daily exercises, just as physical growth demands physical exercise, spiritual growth as a Christian demands spiritual exercise. Daily Die to Self. “I die every day…in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 15:31, Yield complete control of your life to Jesus Christ every day. Daily Obedience to Christ. “Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23, Every day, commit yourself to obeying God and His Word. Daily Bible Reading. “…they…examined the Scriptures every day….” – Acts 17:11, spend time every day reading God’s Word. (First read through the Gospel of Mark.). Daily Prayer. “…give us today our daily bread.” – Matthew 6:11, devote time every day talking to God in prayer. Daily Fellowship. “…encourage one another daily….” – Hebrews 3:13. Daily Witnessing. “Day after day…they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.” – Acts 5:42. The group encourages the players to witness for Jesus Christ every day through your words and actions. Daily Praise. “Seven times a day I praise you.” – Psalm 119:164. Praise God every day for who he is and what he has done.
Matthew 4:1-11; Thursday – Mark 8:34-38; Friday – John 14:1-6.
In San Marcos, the San Marcos Rattlers also have a Fellowship of Christian Athletes group which is headed by football coach Jason Pape.
