Veterans parade organizers seek grand marshal nominations

by PAT MURDOCK

Wanted: A conflict-era veteran of the armed services worthy of special recognition as grand marshal of the City of San Marcos’ 2008 Veterans Day Parade.

The veteran chosen for the special parade leadership honor will be selected by a panel of local veterans’ organization representatives and will be profiled before the parade, which will be held Saturday, November 8, 2008.

The City Parks and Recreation Department, aided by San Marcos’s Main Street director, representatives of local veterans’ organizations and the San Marcos Kiwanis Club, assumed the organizational leadership role in putting together the 2008 parade and a downtown pre-parade breakfast.  Parks and Recreation Director Rodney Cobb and Recreation Manager Lisa Morris and their staff vowed to make this year’s parade even bigger and better.

Highly honored veteran Augustin Lucio was last year’s grand marshal while Bob Wellington, who has since passed away, was honorary grand marshal.

Nominations for grand marshal should be submitted to Lisa Morris at lmorris@ci.san-marcos.tx.us or they can be dropped off or mailed to the Parks and Recreation Department office at the Grant Harris Building, located at 401 E. Hopkins Street, San Marcos, 78666.  Nominations must include the full name and relevant details of the individual’s military service, along with detailed contact information, including a telephone number.  The nomination deadline is Oct. 1.

Criteria for nomination include:

  1. Must be a San Marcos area resident
  2. Must have served in the U.S. military during a time of military conflict
  3. Must have been honorably discharged from the service
  4. Must be willing to share his or her military service memories

According to Morris, Veterans Day Parade applications are posted on the city website www.ci.san-marcos.tx.us   Area individuals, educational institutions, businesses and organizations are invited to “join the parade.”  For more information, call the Parks and Recreation Department at (512) 393-8400.
