All of the employees of San Marcos CISD will gather on Tuesday morning, August 19, to officially open the new 2008-2009 school year with the annual Convocation. The Child Nutrition Department will serve a full, hot breakfast to employees in the San Marcos High School cafeteria from 7:15-8:15 a.m. The Convocation ceremony begins promptly at 8:30 am with the staff gathering in the SMHS Performing Arts Center. The scheduled guest speaker is Dana Boyd, the 2007 Texas Teacher of the Year who was a national finalist in Washington, D.C. Boyd currently serves in Ysleta ISD in El Paso, Texas, as an assistant principal. She has taught first, second, and third grades and believes that the most important aspect in a successful teacher/school leader is building relationships with students, parents, and one’s faculty peers. She says, “Once relationships and a sense of trust have been built in the environment, success is the only option.”
As Texas Teacher of the Year, Boyd has been a spokesperson for education throughout Texas and the United States. She has given several keynote addresses, and she continues to present at various state and national conferences. She says that it is her goal to promote and highlight teachers, the best practices of the teaching profession, and effective leadership in schools. “We [teachers] are the foundation of all other professions,” Boyd says. “Just as I.B.M. and NIKE promote their products, teachers must be highlighted, too.”
Boyd received her Masters degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2005. She and her husband James have two children.
Texas Teacher of the Year is the highest honor that the State of Texas can bestow upon a teacher. Conducted by the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Teacher of the Year Program annual recognizes and rewards teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching.
