The Greater San Marcos Youth Council benefitted this week from the Christ The Redeemer Church’s vacation bible school. The program taught children about power and the power to help others in their community. The Greater San Marcos Youth Council, Inc. began serving the children and families of Hays County in 1986. As a private, non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation, GSMYC is dedicated to protecting children and strengthening families through a variety of services such as emergency shelter, counseling services, parenting classes, crisis intervention and child abuse prevention. These programs are funded in part by the Department of Family and Protective Services, United Way, local city and county governments and private contributions.

The Children’s Shelter operated by GSMYC, provides a stable, non- judgmental atmosphere to children who have been abused, abandoned and/or neglected. GSMYC’s shelter is licensed by the Department of Family and Protective Services as a 16 bed emergency shelter for children under the age of 18.

The Vacation Bible School total attendance for the four day event this week was as follows:

Total attendance for four days 339

Total Children attending 152

Total Adults attending 187

The children brought food and other supplies all week to help area youth not as fortunate as they are in San Marcos. Representatives from the GSMYC, Nina Meadows and Mary Hill, were on hand to receive the children’s donations which added up to more than two hundred dollars and over two hundred and fifty pounds of cereal and foods which the children requested on their wish list.

Lori Sims, Operations Director for the Youth Shelter said, “This is extremely beneficial to our group, we appreciate all that Christ The Redeemer has done for us over the years.”
