The Kiwanis of San Marcos held their weekly meeting at Grin’s Restaurant at noon on Thursday. The group led by President Pam Cook hosted speakers Judy Tate and Donna Schoonover from the Scheib Opportunity Center. They spoke about their services for individuals with mental health issues and disabilities.

The facility had 73 individuals under service in September 2007 and today they serve 115 from their location on North Bishop in San Marcos, Texas. To be admitted for services they must have mental retardation as a primary diagnosis at the facility. Judy Tate told the group, “Our main focus is to get them skills training to they may work and become more independent.”

They service residents with needs from Hays County to Del Rio. They showed a video on Luis Chavez and how he has overcome his disabilities with the help of the staff at the Scheib Opportunity Center.

“We tell all of our residents to reach for the stars, we must get them the skills to be functional,” said Donna Schoonover. The facility has operated in this area since 1971.

In Kiwanis news, the group spoke about renovations at the group’s campground made possible through the help of the Gary Job Corp and members Lon Shell and McBride Wilson. Craig Nedry led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Also, Wayne Davis from Norfolk, Virginia was recognized as a visitor of Randy Cook.
