A San Marcos police officer arrested three San Antonio men early Friday after a small explosion and fire erupted at a transmission shop on State Highway 123 and Broadway in San Marcos.
At about 1:45 a.m. Friday, Police Officer Joyce Bender, who was on patrol in the area, observed brake lights from a vehicle in front of AAMCO Transmission at 1206 Highway 123.
As she approached the suspicious vehicle, a fire erupted inside the business. A man whose clothes were on fire ran outside. She detained the suspect at gunpoint and discovered two other occupants in a black Cadillac SUV.
She held all three men until other police units arrived on the scene. The suspect whose clothes caught fire was not seriously injured and did not require medical attention, police said.
Arrested for arson were Adam Rodriguez, age 26, (DOB 04-10-1982), Michael Rodriguez, age 18 (DOB 01-01-1990), and Jeremy Garcia, age 19, (DOB 02-03-1989), all of San Antonio . They are jailed at the Hays County Law Enforcement Center.
San Marcos Fire Rescue responded with four engines and 15 personnel to suppress the fire. About 30% of the building was damaged as were five vehicles inside the building.
The San Marcos Fire Department is working with San Antonio Fire Investigators concerning a possible fire that occurred the same time, said Fire Marshal Ken Bell. The other facility was also an AAMCO shop located on Perrin Beittel Road in San Antonio.
The case is still under investigation.
