San Marcos Rattlers face challenging football schedule

In addition to their placement in District 27-4A, the San Marcos Rattlers face other difficulties in their 2008 high school football schedule.

For one, they begin on Aug. 29 at perennial state title contender Waco High, which isn’t what you’d call a soft introduction. For another, the Rattlers have only four home games scheduled on their ten-game slate. In no case do the Rattlers play two consecutive games at home.

Put it all together – a strong district, an opener at Waco and only four home games – and one has to surmise that if the Rattlers can make the playoffs, they will already have been tested.

Following the Waco game, the Rattlers come home to Bobcat Stadium for the first time this season on Sept. 5 against Bastrop for Parent’s Night. The following Friday, Sept. 12, the Rattlers go to Lampasas for their final non-district game of the year. The Rattlers will take the next Friday, Sept. 19, as their open date.

The District 27-4 schedule starts on Sept. 26 with a demanding assignment at Cibolo Steele, which made the 2007 playoffs in only its second year of varsity football behind a good running game and strong defense.

On Oct. 3, the Rattlers return to Bobcat Stadium for their homecoming game against New Braunfels Canyon. The game will constitute a true homecoming, as the Rattlers will have been away from their own game turf for nearly a month.

On Oct. 10, the Rattlers will undertake the long bus trip to Kerrville for a game against Tivy. After San Marcos officials gave the long drive to Kerrville as a reason for being moved to a closer district in February, the University Interscholastic League put the Rattlers in District 17-4A for every sport except football.

San Marcos is back in Bobcat Stadium against Alamo Heights for Little Rattler Night on Oct. 17. But the Rattlers are back on the road to play at Schertz Clemens on Oct. 24.

The Rattlers play their final home game on Oct. 31 against Boerne for Senior Night. The regular season will end on Nov. 3, with a game at Seguin.

Added to all that, the Rattlers have scheduled only one scrimmage, that against Tyler Lee at Waco on Aug. 22.

All the regular season games will begin at 7:30 p.m. The scrimmage against Tyler Lee will begin at 5 p.m.
