Ex-Bobcat Hazle qualifies for Olympics

EUGENE, OR – Former Texas State track and field athlete Mike Hazle qualified for his first Olympics after placing second in the men’s javelin final with a throw of 248 feet, 7 inches on his third attempt at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials on Sunday.

Bobby Smith of the Monmouth Track Club won the event with a 249-6 mark on his fifth throw after Hazle led the event through four of the six throws. Hazle’s last attempt to reclaim the lead resulted in a foul.

Fellow Texas State alumnus Abby Ruston also was in action Sunday for the women’s shot put finals, where she finished eighth.

The Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China, Aug. 8-24.

Hazle qualified for the finals with a throw of 247-11, which was the second-best throw in the second round of preliminaries.

Hazle won a silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games and finished second at the 2007 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. While at Texas State, Hazle won the 2002 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
